About the Program
The Box Hill Senior Secondary College Tennis Academy was established in 2005 to enable gifted athletes to combine their goals in tennis with a comprehensive and stimulating education. Students who are accepted into the full senior program can choose to manage their workload by completing their VCE over three years. Senior Students complete either a full time (replaces two subjects/electives) or part-time (replaces one subject/electives) tennis program at the college. Student courses can be tailored for US College scholarship eligibility and are designed around the student goals.
The Box Hill Tennis Academy is run by Vida Tennis and students in the program participate in the following:
- Individualised periodized program
- Squad sessions
- Semi-private and small group sessions
- Technique development using video analysis
- Point and match play sessions,
- Weight training and recovery which concentrates on strength conditioning
- Fitness and agility, fitness testing which is benchmarked against ITF standards
- Activities off court that encourage team building, social skills and initiative
- A physiotherapy screening and monitoring process
- A sports psychology program to enhance performance
- Nutrition program run by a qualified dietician,
- Goal setting
- Tournament and match supervision and much more.
There is a criteria to be excepted into the Academy program at the school which includes playing ability, attitude, goals in tennis, and grade point average (academic), If you are interested in finding out more about the program or if the program would be a good fit for you, please feel free to contact us.
Meet The Team
The Vida Team who run the Box Hill Tennis Academy are leaders in their fields. The Director of coaching, Jo Karaitiana, is a Tennis Australia Club Professional, former Professional players and a US College graduate from the University of Tulsa. In recent years Jo has been working with Tennis Australia in a player development role and has taken the role as Director of coaching at Box Hill in 2019. Her background in Sports Science (Bachelor of Science: Exercise and Sports Science) and past plying & coaching experience helps to guide a holistic tennis program. Jo is on site each day at the school and manages the on-court coaching programs as well and supporting players with their nutrition, S&C, goal setting, and personal development.
Paul Vassallo, our Technical Director, is the only Platinum Talent Development coach in Victoria and has worked with numerous players who have won National titles. Paul is a lead facilitator for Tennis Australia in on-court coach development and was 2018 TCAV coach of the year. Paul’s role in the program is to ensure the technical development of the athletes through the use of video analysis and linking this with the on-court program. Paul has a real passion for player development and is a great asset to the playing group.
Ignacio Crescini is the current performance coach at MCC Glen Iris Valley where he works with players who are playing Australian ranking events right through to players with ATP/WTA rankings. He has had years of international coaching experience in South America, India, and Europe.
Kane Dewhurst is the program manager for the academy and combines his on-court knowledge with his planning skills to help structure and guide the program. A former Talent Development coach, Kane is a Master Club Professional and industry leader.
There will be more of the Vida team involved in the delivery of the program including Danny Oltvay, Blake Poyser, Nick Opasinov and Vince Dattoli.
After School Program
In 2019 Vida Tennis will also be running an after-school program. This program will run separately to the Box Hill SSC Tennis Academy.
