Tennis world number one Novak Djokovic will represent Swan Hill at the Australian Open this week after a grassroots campaign catapulted the rural city to the top of a national leader board. Swan Hill hosted a number of Free Tennis Day, an initiative by Tennis Australia, and engaged more people into tennis than any other club / town in Australia. This then gave the town the chance to pick which player would represent the region.
The Serbian superstar has won four of the past five Australian Opens and if he takes the top prize in 2016, the trophy will come to Swan Hill, and the Djoker may even make an appearance himself.
Vida Tennis Swan Hill coach David Jonkers saw the opportunity to make a difference for the sport in the region when he first found out about the competition.
On the morning of the Australian Open draw, Friday the 15th, a group of Swan Hill Tennis Club tennis players and families had a once in a life time experience meeting the world number one. And Novak did not disappoint.
