A tennis ball machine is now available for hire at the Altona Tennis Club. This is a great way to increase your practice time without a hitting partner. You can also focus on repetition hitting to work on a technique, fitness or just enjoy hitting some balls.

Tennis Ball Machine Benefit #1: Shot Practice / Repetition
After a lesson, when you want to practice a new shot or technique change you’ve been working on, it’s a great way to hit a lot of balls in a “closed skill” environment. This means the ball is going to be coming to you in a consistent place so that you can focus on the stroke production. Remembering of course that only “perfect practice makes perfect,” it’s critical to use good technique when you hit with the ball machine — otherwise you’re just cementing bad habits.
Tennis Ball Machine Benefit #2: Build Concentration
Focus on one of your development goals while using the machine to build concentration by trying to hit a certain number of balls; to a certain spot, with a particular technique or with a type of speed or spin. This is a lot harder than it seems!
Tennis Ball Machine Benefit #3: Cardio Exercise
Another benefit of ball machine practice is that it provides a good cardio workout. Another great idea is to put on a heart rate monitor on while you are using the machine. Then you can try and maintain a particular rate. The ball machine has the ability to move the ball into different areas of the court to allow you to work on movement.
